Wow, great web site. I just discovered this and really appreicate the work. It was great finding pictures and references to folks like Bob Ware, Tommy Goff (I was in tommy's first "beginner" band at Auburn High School), Dave Edwards and so many others. I was in the marching band but could not muster the talent to cut it with the Knights. But I enjoyed their performances the entire time I lived in Auburn. It has been a while since my Dad (Bodie Hinton) has made it to a reunion but I'll enjoy sharing this web site with him. Thanks again and please keep this up. Skip Hinton

What a nice sight. My father, Charles Blackledge, was in the founding group at the organizational meeting. He was the youngest there and has the good fortune of being one of the two surving members. He is 93! At least I think another gentleman is alive in Texas. He is the trombonist sitting on the far left in the photo. I loved hearing the stories as I was growing up. One of the favorite places they played was at Radium Springs, Georgia. There was a natural hot spring mineral pool and a golf course. I finally saw it a few years ago could just imagine the music and the dancing, and those Auburn Knights! He attended and played some at the fiftieth reunion and had a great time. What an honor that the music still continues.

She had her own band in the 40's. I am carrying the tradition playing jazz guitar in Orlando, Fl. Any info would be appreciated.

ATTN; 1934-1939 ALUMNI - My father, Joe Mitchell, played sax and clarinet for the Auburn Knights in late thirties, early forties. I am editing a non-fiction book of recollections from the year 1936 and those years surrounding. The book began from correspondence exchanged between Stanley Sheinbaum, publisher and Frank Pierson, Academy Award winning screenwriter ("Dog Day Afternoon", "Cool Hand Luke" "Cat Ballou" etc). It will be published in the fall of 2001 by Tallfellow Press in Los Angeles. My father passed away in 1990 so he cannot contribute to the book. But I am determined in his honor to have one of the members of the Auburn Knights who played in the mid to late thirties, contribute a recollection for this book. The writing may be anywhere from a sentence to a paragraph to several pages. I am on the first edit, with 103 stories from politicians, artists, actors, athletes,Europeans escaping Germany, Italians, Cowboys and Indians, Merchant Marines, etc. A very diverse group. Please write to me at polka.bikini@gte.net or Tallfellow Press, 1180 South Beverly Drive Sutie 320, Beverly Hills, CA] 90035 - The only requirement is that you have some clear recollection of that time. Thank you so much. Please respond.

Just discovered your web site and enjoy it immensely. I grew up in Opelika and was a jazz fan from early on. My band director was Bob Lewis (AK 49-53) and he turned me on to jazz. We had the band play at a formal dance at Opelika High School in 1960 and I was hooked on the band. My mom even sewed a button on "Boots" Butenschon's shirt before the dance. I played a few gigs with the band in 65-66 but was never an official member. I have a copy of "Happy - 1960" (which featured Toni Tennille) that is almost slick from play. Do any of the old tapes still exist for reissue? Keep up the good work.

Many Emails have come into "Thebigbands.com" concerning a picture on the website showing the Bob Crosby Bobcats orchestra of the early 30's. A carload of the orchestra sidemen is shown with Frank Tennille, vocalist, sitting on the running board. Frank Tennille, from Montgomery, Alabama, was an original member of the Auburn Knights Orchestra and later became the father of Toni Tennille, also an AK alumnus. The site is devoted to preserving the great Swing Music of the Big Band Era as well as the giants who performed it. Down through the years, many members of the Auburn Knights have contributed to this greatness. Hopefully, there will be others who can share stories of The Auburn Knights Orchestra. Contact the Website at "Thebigbands.com" You'll find the Email address there too. "Info@thebigbands.com" The Duke said it best. "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing"!

The site is devoted to preserving the great Swing Music of the Big Band Era as well as the giants who performed it.

My father - Ken Lowry - played with the Auburn Knights but I am not sure what years - I suspect some time in the late 30's or early 40's. He played trumpet, sax, and piano but I think he played sax with the Knights. He used to talk about it when I was a young child. He married Jackie Scott from Rome, Ga.
